Five Ways to Make the Most of the Summer Holidays in Christchurch

Set where coast and countryside meet, Christchurch comes into its own during the summer months. From lively community events to peaceful harbour views, this charming Dorset town offers endless opportunities to enjoy the season, whether you're spending time with family, catching up with friends, or simply making the most of longer days by the water. It’s easy to see why Christchurch is one of the best coastal towns to call home in 2026.

If you're looking for inspiration this summer, here are five wonderful ways to experience everything Christchurch has to offer.

1. Soak up the atmosphere at Christchurch Carnival

Few events bring the community together quite like the Christchurch Carnival.  For over 115 years, Christchurch Carnival has been the setting of memorable moments, helping to bring thousands of people and families together, and it’s become a highlight of the local calendar. The carnival fills the town with colour, energy and celebration, creating a vibrant atmosphere for everyone attending.

This year, we were pleased to be the headline sponsor of the event, and had a wonderful weekend on the ground connecting with many members of the local community, as well as meeting some of our lovely shared owners and enjoying the parade!

It's events like these that showcase what makes Christchurch such a great place to live. The strong sense of community is one of the reasons many people are choosing to put down roots here and enjoy a lifestyle that balances coastal living with a welcoming neighbourhood feel.

2. Spend a sunny day at Avon Beach

When the weather is warm, there are few better places to be than Avon Beach! With stunning views across the Solent and plenty of space to unwind, it's a favourite spot for families, dog walkers and anyone looking to enjoy the Dorset coastline.

Having beautiful beaches within easy reach is one of the many perks of living in Christchurch, and it's easy to see why so many people choose this area for a lifestyle that's connected to the outdoors.

3. Explore Christchurch Quay

Whether you're heading out for an early morning walk or looking for a peaceful way to spend an afternoon, Christchurch Quay is always worth a visit.

The quay is at the heart of the town's appeal, offering beautiful waterside views, abundant wildlife and plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing are all popular during the summer months, while the network of walking routes makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Additionally, there is a vast selection of restaurants and coffee shops, such as The Boathouse right on the quay, and the High Street just a stone’s throw away.

For residents, having access to places like Christchurch Quay one of the things that makes life here so rewarding.

4. Discover Highcliffe Castle

Just a short distance from Christchurch town centre, Highcliffe Castle offers a fantastic day out for all ages.

The castle's impressive architecture, fascinating history and stunning coastal setting make it one of Dorset's most distinctive landmarks. During the summer holidays, the grounds are particularly popular, providing plenty of space for walks, picnics and family adventures.

The surrounding clifftop paths also offer spectacular views of the coastline, making it a favourite destination for locals looking to make the most of a sunny day.

5. Enjoy Christchurch’s historic town centre

One of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon is simply exploring Christchurch itself. The historic town centre is full of character, with independent shops, cosy cafés and riverside spots perfect for lunch in the sunshine.

A visit to Christchurch Priory is a must, standing proudly as one of the town's most recognisable landmarks. The Priory occasionally offers Tower Tours, in which you can climb the 176 steps to the top of the Priory tower, and enjoy the panoramic views of Christchurch and beyond. Along the side of Norman House and Christchurch Priory, walks along the River Stour provide a peaceful escape from the busier parts of town, and beautiful views.

It's this balance of heritage, community and everyday convenience that continues to make Christchurch such a sought-after place to live. For those looking for a new home, having these amenities on your doorstep means every weekend can feel a little bit like a holiday.
